Private Bridges

Many private developments require bridges for property access, internal waterway crossings, or simply as a specific architectural item.

Thomas Marine has built more than 25 different privately owned bridges for developers and owners from local and national organizations. Quite often Thomas Marine’s participation starts in the conceptual phase to ensure a quality project for the best cost possible.

TMC has a unique knowledge of the private bridge industry in SWFL and can assist with permitting, with design, and with architectural goals. The photos to the right show some of the projects.

  • Initial Assessment and Planning: Determine the purpose of the bridge, its location, and the type of bridge needed (e.g., pedestrian, vehicular). Conduct site surveys and soil tests to assess the ground conditions and environmental impact.

  • Design and Engineering: Work with civil engineers and architects to design the bridge. Considerations include load capacity, materials (wood, steel, concrete), aesthetics, and compliance with local building codes and regulations.

  • Permits and Approvals: Obtain necessary permits from local authorities. This may include environmental permits, zoning approvals, and adherence to safety regulations. For waterways, permits from agencies like the Army Corps of Engineers might be needed.
